How bad is it that I don't know what GPOY is after all this time. (I mean I could look it up, but what am I? Some sort of librarian?)
GPOY is an acronym that stands for “gravy, porkchops, onions, and yogurt”, a reference to a traditional meal of Illinois Swiss Lutherans. Much like the “sandwich tweet” of Twitter fame, GPOY gained some notoriety as a “hey look what I’m eating” meme, which translated into a more general “hey, look at me” meme. Now it’s common on Tumblr, Twitter, and some other social networking sites to tag photos of one’s self as GPOY, which is often mistaken to mean “gratuitous picture of yourself”. Of course, that doesn’t make any sense at all, because a picture of one’s self would appropriately be tagged GPOM - gratuitous picture of myself (since the post-er is also probably the tagger).
